(Hannover September 3, 2018 )In today's tire industry, products must meet ever more stringent quality standards. That's exactly where the new C-Check 500 measuring system comes into play. With this development, the KraussMaffei Berstorff design engineers have succeeded once again in setting challenging standards: the C-Check system allows the conductivity of chimney strips to be checked directly after the extrusion process by non-contact measurement. Off- spec batches can thus be detected during the production process to minimize scrap. In case lack of conductivity is detected in the vulcanized tire the complete tire needs to be scrapped. A non conductive component however can be re-used in the virgin compound and this will lead to tremendous costs-savings. Recipe-controlled positioning, combined with automatic height adjustment of the test system, ensures uncompromising flexibility and excellent precision.

To reduce the rolling resistance of passenger car and truck tires, tire producers often replace carbon black by silica in their rubber compounds used in tread production. Silica is characterized by high electric resistance and acts as an isolator. For this reason, a continuous conductive strip (chimney) on carbon black basis is additionally required in the tread profile to eliminate the electrostatic charge from the tire. The chimney strip has a width of a few millimetres only and avoids electrostatic charging produced by the contact with the road surface.

C-Check 500 checks the chimney conductivity in-line at variable production speeds. The system is designed for automatic and non-contact measurement of the electric conductivity between the outside and inside ofthe tread. The motor-driven electrode charges the strip that is placed on an earthed conveying system. The fully functional chimney strip eliminates the electrostatic charge via an additional earthed electrode. If the electric resistance is below the preset value, a message will appear.

The measurement is performed in real time and can be displayed on a local control panel or transmitted via an appropriate interface. The exceptional functionality of the C-Check 500 system is simply unique on the market. Thanks to the non-contact monitoring principle, there are no restrictions as far as the use of marking systems is concerned.

The standard equipment comprises the sturdy base frame designed to accommodate the temperature control units and the oil lubrication system. The state-of-the-art control software can be seamlessly integrated into the digital factory, ready for Industry 4.0. The on-board operating panel with display of all important extruder information saves time and provides enhanced ease of use.

KraussMaffei Berstorff extrusion lines are designed for outstanding product quality and unparalleled output rates and can be equipped with different extruder design variants and sizes. The modular design allows the extrusion line to be configured easily according to the desired profile cross-sections: tire lines are available in Duplex, Triplex, Quadroplex, Quintoplex or Hexaplex configuration. Specially engineered flow channels inside theextrusion head help to meet the high quality requirements. These flow channels ensure a very gentle transition of the processed material from the round cross-section in the screw zone to the flat rectangular profile shape. In addition, the deflection of the material flow inside the flow channel is minimized.

A monitoring system is provided to keep a constant check on the entire process sequence. This ensures maximum operational reliability. At the same time, the system offers extensive data acquisition options.

Throughput rates of up to 10,000 kg/h or approximately 30,000 passenger car treads per day can be achieved with these state-of-the-art extrusion lines.
