New Extrusion Concept for UD Pads

UD Tape (Unidirectional Tape) is a thermoplastic tape made of glass or carbon reinforced fibers embedded parallel to a thermoplastic matrix.
UD tape's thermosetting solutions feature shorter production times and lower weights when compared to other methods of manufacturing fiber-reinforced plastic components.

Product Features

For mechanical strength, fiber incorporation is once again required in components.
However, the injection molding process imposes limitations on fiber length, thereby imposing limits on mechanical strength.
Consequently, special treatment is necessary for areas where stress concentrates, such as notches and open sections.
Increasing fiber content or thickness, or inserting metal in necessary areas, are options to improve strength. However, this comes at the cost of increased weight and higher expenses.
Unidirectional (UD) tapes/pads and sheets, where fibers are embedded in one direction, can easily conform to the part’s morphology* without adding weight or cost.
*Morphology: In the plastics industry, this term primarily refers to “the manner in which components mix when two or more polymers (or additives) are blended.” For crystalline polymers, it also describes “the size and orientation of crystals.”
